Wild Rift Debuts Gameplay in New Dev Diary, Two Week Alpha for Brazil and Philippines Announced

A brand new League of Legends: Wild Rift developer’s diary released with a new trailer, and an alpha for Brazil and Philippines revealed.

In celebration of the upcoming League of Legends: Wild Rift, executive producer Michael “Riot Paladin” Chow has released a brand new developer’s diary (from home). The video delves into some new announcements including some exciting news: a limited Android alpha test for players in Brazil and the Philippines. The purpose of this alpha is to gain some much needed feedback from the community.

The dev diary also debuted brand new gameplay footage from Wild Rift and details updates for Champions, a gameplay overview, and a skins overview. You can check out the full video below:

The official summary of the game: “Coming in 2020, League of Legends: Wild Rift brings the fast-paced PVP action-strategy of the LoL PC game to mobile and console! Featuring the same skill-based 5v5 PVP gameplay you expect from League of Legends on PC, Wild Rift was built from the ground up for new platforms. Lock your choice from a huge cast of League champions, team up with friends, and outplay the opposition.”

The last time we had any news about League of Legends: Wild Rift was earlier this year in March when Riot released a new video detailing the latest progress with development. At the time, a potential release window for the platform had yet to be given, with the team lead for Wild Rift saying that the game needed a bit more time. Much like with Riot Valorant announcement last week via Summer Game Fest, perhaps further details on the release window for Wild Rift will be detailed soon as well.

There’s also a good chance that we’ll hear more specifics about platforms that the game will be coming to. Riot as of now has only confirmed iOS and Android devices for League of Legends: Wild Rift, but the title is coming to consoles, too.

EA Sports Releases Statement on Black Lives Matters Protests, Will Not Air New Trailer Tomorrow

The official EA Sports account has released their own statement on Twitter regarding their support of the mass Black Lives Matter protests.

Amidst the civil unrest of the past few days, many companies have taken to Twitter to support the protesters and EA Sports is now among them. An official statement posted to the Madden NFL account makes their stance clear on the matter:

According to the statement, the publisher has decided to forgo tomorrow’s release of their new trailer for the upcoming Madden 21 and instead will be focusing “on actions we can take to drive change against the unjust treatment and systemic bias that is plaguing the nation and our world.” How they will go about this has not been clarified at this time.

There is still the EA Play event happening on June 11th so it’s unclear on how this will impact it, if at all. Madden 21 was officially announced during the Inside Xbox showcase on May 7th and will launch this August for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Most likely the game will also be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X once those consoles launch. Here’s hoping the team can impress as we head toward EA Play. And during the Stadia Connect in April, Google Vice President Phil Harrison announced EA will be bringing five games to the game streaming platform including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderMadden NFL, and FIFA.

It’s interesting to note that, according to Variety, NFL owners have already voted to extend EA Sports’ exclusivity agreement with the league this week as part of the agenda for a now virtual spring meeting. EA will retain the exclusive rights to produce simulation-based NFL games up until the 2026 campaign. The NFL’s deal, approved via vote by owners on Thursday, is worth more than $1 billion per year, according to one of the sources. And the NFL has also released their own statement in support of the same protests (which contradicts their initial stance on Colin Kaepernick’s protests a few years back).

Nintendo Brand Ambassador Program Possibly Ending According to Content Creators

The Nintendo Brand Ambassador Program might be coming to an end, according to popular content creator Wood Hawker in recent tweets.

It seems that the long running Nintendo Brand Ambassador Program might be coming to an end, according to Wood Hawker (of BeatEmUps and guest on The Game Chasers). He first tweeted out that Nintendo contacted him, informing him that they wouldn’t continue with his membership. Then Hawker speculated on a possible new program that could take its place:

After that, he continued to address questions from other Twitter users, including whether this would affect his channel content or relationship with the company in any way:

According to Nintendo Wire: “Other Nintendo-centric news outlets that have reported this story have also reached out to various brand ambassadors who have confirmed the changes, but have done so anonymously. Emails are still rolling out for all members and Nintendo has yet to issue any statements about the change.”

Hopefully the company will release a statement clearing up this matter soon. And even better, announce a new program for content creators to join. The Nintendo Brand Ambassador Program is an exclusive partner program that has content creators, social media influencers, and lifestyle vloggers/bloggers cover Nintendo-related topics and receive various perks in return.

In a recent interview, CEO of Saber Interactive Matthew Karch stated that’s there’s still a lot of potential in the Switch and that fans may be surprised about what other titles are on the way. Earlier during this month’s SegaNama stream, Sega’s Toshihiro Nagoshi shared some insightful comments on Animal Crossing, Switch record sales during Covid-19 lockdown.

In a recent report from Nikkei Asian Review, Nintendo stated that they would be increasing Switch production to meet the high demands in response to the growing demand from newly homebound gamers. Nintendo has “asked multiple suppliers and contract assemblers to prepare for additional production,” a necessary move due to the coronavirus pandemic. Case in point, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 3 million copies in Japan alone, which greatly contributed to the high demand for the console.

In other news, following recent reports of Network accounts getting hacked, Nintendo announced that they would no longer allow for consumers to login through their Network ID. According to an official statement: “As one action in our ongoing investigation, we are discontinuing the ability to use a Network ID to sign in to an account. All other options to sign in to an account remain available.” The statement went on to “reassure users that there is currently no evidence pointing toward a breach of Nintendo’s databases, servers or services.”

Mementos Mission Manga Final Volume Drops in July, Last Chapter to Release This June

The Persona 5: Mementos Mission manga will be concluding its serialization on June 27th, with the third and volume releasing on July 27th.

The last volume of the Persona 5 manga, Persona 5: Mementos Mission, has been slated for a July 27th release. Meanwhile the final chapter of that same manga, titled Act 18, will debut on June 27th in the August 2020 issue of Dengeki Maoh magazine:

Unlike the still ongoing Persona 5 manga (a straight retelling of events in the original game starring protagonist Akira Kurusu), Persona 5: Mementos Mission features protagonist Ren Amamiya tackling original side stories along with his allies. Said manga began its serialization on October 27, 2018.

Sega hasn’t released a clear sales figure for Persona 5 Royal as of yet. However, we do know a few things from previous reports. In its first month in Japan, the game had shipped over 400K copies. Royal also topped the sales charts in both Taiwan and South Korea. Plus, it was in the top ten for both the UK and US charts during its opening weeks.

Back in February of this year I was able to sit down with the head of Atlus West PR, Arianne Advincula, for a quick interview. We discussed the challenges faced working with a game that has already been released in Japan, changes in the English localization between the original P5 and Royal, how streaming policies have been being handled since its launch in the West, the EFIGS localization, and more.

Twitter artist Enrique Bolatre (Lovely Nighto) recently imagined what the main cast would look like as the villagers from the popular Nintendo title Animal Crossing in an adorable piece of fanart.

You can read our review of Persona 5 Royal written by yours truly, in which I state that “Atlus has packed Persona 5 Royal full of new content that is sure to delight newcomers and even veterans of the original with a far more robust experience.” There’s also our post review discussion featuring myself and Video Manager Mario Rivera as we broke down some of our favorite parts of the game.

NES Transformed into Nintendo Switch Charging Dock

A Redditor recently built a custom Nintendo Switch charging dock. The twist? It’s made from the shell of a NES.

A creative and talented Redditor IMOKRUOK showed off a NES shell they customized to work as a Nintendo Switch dock. In their post was a detailed breakdown of the process behind building it, as well as a short clip of them using the dock in question:

You can check out some of the screenshots IMOKRUOK posted on Imgur, showing a step by step progression of the dock being built:

The creativity behind this is incredible, as well as the actual craftsmanship. According to the poster, the shell is from an actual NES while the internal parts are laser printed.

Another recently shared project by Twitter user TyDilla when they morphed their original Nintendo Switch into a Gameboy Color inspired Nintendo Switch. And  Nintendo Switch game storage cases that double as keychains. Another Reddit user, Swervito, decided to bless up with a custom designed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt-inspired Switch Lite.

In a recent interview, CEO of Saber Interactive Matthew Karch stated that’s there’s still a lot of potential in the system and that fans may be surprised about what other titles are on the way. Crusader Kings III Dev Diary Highlights the Religion and Culture Systems

Crusader Kings III’s latest dev diary breaks down the religion and culture systems and how these important mechanics will impact your campaign.

The latest developer diary from Paradox Interactive highlights one of Crusader Kings III‘s most important mechanics, the religion and culture system. Specifically it breaks down the following aspects of religion in the game and their relevancy to a campaign: religion and faith, custom, faiths and pagan reformation, medieval tapestry, holy orders, heresies and doctrines, map features and modes, map scope, cultures and cultural Innovations, and art focus.

The amount of detail and research that clearly went into the religions and cultures from around the world is impressive. And the fact that those differences play such a vital role in your campaign adds a sense of depth and realism to the game world.

The release date for Crusader Kings III was revealed to be September 1st in a new story trailer, with the game making its initial debut through a story trailer. Said trailer highlighted the title’s theme of using both cunning and alliances to strengthen your kingdom and secure its dynasty for generations to come. Crusader Kings III will be the most recent installment of the popular strategy game franchise Crusader Kings from Paradox Interactive,

According to Game Director Henrik Fåhraeus concerning the latest installment: “Crusader Kings III is a grand medieval simulator where you are free to live out any plausible ruler fantasy that we could think of — but not without challenge. Seeing its predecessor explode in popularity was very satisfying, especially considering that user friendliness was never our primary goal. Now we have a chance to address an even larger audience.”

The official site also details what to expect from the latest Crusader Kings title:

  • Shape Your Dynasty: Guide unique characters through history, choosing lifestyles best suited to their personalities and your ambitions.
  • Rewrite Medieval History: Dynasties will change and adapt to changes in family and politics, and religious beliefs are more firmly under your control.
  • Build a Mighty Kingdom: Use your vassals’ fear of you as a weapon or call on familial obligations to persuade reluctant relatives to submit.
  • Experience High Drama: Stranger than fiction stories leap off the screen, as characters plot against you and events push you to extremes.
  • Learn as You Go: Guided advice to help newcomers navigate a rich medieval world. In-game suggestions tip you off to paths you might not have considered.
  • The Usual Crusader Kings Fun: Keep a stubborn council in line, scheme against your overbearing uncle or marry the rich duchy…oops, I mean pious duke or duchess of your dreams.

Meanwhile, for those wanting to sharpen their skills for next year, Crusader Kings II‘s base game is now free to play for Steam. There’s also plenty of DLC content once you run through the main campaign such as the Monks and Mystics ExpansionJade Dragon Expansion, and the Holy Fury Expansion.

If you’re a fan of board games, the Crusader Kings The Board Game was fully funded on Kickstarter just last year. Crusader Kings III will launch for PC via Steam and is included in Xbox Game Pass for PC. Be sure to check out our extensive preview of the game here as well.

Take-Two CEO is Seemingly Disappointed by Google Stadia Outcome

For those that play on Google Stadia, it might be best not to expect any games from Take-Two anytime soon.

Google Stadia has been out to the public for over six months now with a library of 30 titles. One of those included titles is Red Dead Redemption II owned by Take-Two, one of the biggest companies in the gaming industry. Recently at the Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke about his feelings about the platform since it’s release.

“The launch of Stadia has been slow. I think there was some overpromising on what the technology could deliver and some consumer disappointment as a result,” said Zelnick. This seems to be an ongoing trend that both industry folk and consumers majorly feel similar about. Zelnick said that the company decided to work with Google due to the reality that streaming is eventually going to become a common trend in gaming and Google made the technology seem more impressive than it actually turned out to be.

“Anytime you broaden distribution you potentially broaden your audience, which is why we supported the release of Stadia with three titles initially and will continue to support high-quality streaming services as long as the business model makes sense,” Zelnick explained. “Over time I believe streaming will work… The belief that streaming was going to be transformative was based on a view that there were loads of people who really had an interest in interactive entertainment, really wanted to pay for it, but just didn’t want to have a console. I’m not sure that turned out to be the case.” Other games in the Stadia library under the Take-Two banner are NBA 2K20 and Borderlands 3.

According to Gamespot, Zelnick has stated previously his less than optimistic feels regarding subscription models as well as streaming services in gaming due to the lower consumer usage compared to TV or film. That being said, Grand Theft Auto V was on Xbox Game Pass for quite some time and has recently been replaced with Red Dead Redemption II. At this point, it seems that he is open enough to the idea to keep going with the trend until further notice.

Call of Duty Warzone Duos Mode is Now Available With Season 4 Coming Soon

Duos are finally here in Call of Duty Warzone and Captain Price is making his debut in Season 4.

Call of Duty Warzone has brought the long-awaited Duos mode to its battle royale. This has been requested by fans of the game since it released back in March earlier this year. Up to this point, Warzone has had Solos, Trios, and Quads, but now the gang’s all here. Duos was highly rumored to come to Warzone especially after it was teased seemingly on accident from the official Call of Duty website in early April.

This will finally allow players (and myself) to join in a game without having to worry about a random third person joining your squad. Fans gave backlash to Infinity Ward after removing Trios for Quads at the start of Season 3 leading them to bring the mode back.

Throughout all major Battle Royale titles Quads is the highest number of people on one team that has been attempted, however, developer Patrick Kelley has said in the past that the studio is testing out a five-player team mode which could possibly increase the number of players in a single match.

With Season 3 ending on June 2nd, players can already look forward to Season 4 and the addition of franchise icon Captain Price joining into the fray as an available skin. There will be a double XP weekend beginning today that will allow those who need to finish leveling up their battle pass to do so before Wednesday next week. Season 4 begins on June 3rd just a day after the end of Season 3. Players can buy the battle pass for $9.99 through the title’s in-game currency.

Metro Redux is Making Its Way to Google Stadia

Metro Redux is the latest title to head to the Google Stadia library.

Metro Redux is the latest game to release on Google Stadia. This makes it the 31st game to hit the Stadia library since it’s release on November 19th of last year.

Metro Redux is the collection of both Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, the first two entries in the Metro series. Metro Exodus, the latest entry in the franchise was a launch title for the platform. When Google Stadia launched its reception was more than underwhelming due to its weak library as well as feeling like a soft launch instead of something highly anticipated like a new console from Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.

Even though Google Stadia isn’t on everyone’s radar currently, numerous major titles are already confirmed to make it’s way to the platform including Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate IIIand Assassin’s Creed Valhalla just to name a few. Google has stated in the past that they have first-party studios working on exclusive titles that hopefully will bring more players to their platform.

There is currently no set release date for Metro Redux outside of being available soon, but for those interested to give Google Stadia a shot, you can purchase the Stadia Premiere Edition over on the Google shop which includes the “Clearly White” controller, three months of Google Stadia Pro and the Google Chromecast Ultra for $129.

Nemesis Lockdown Is a Massive, Stand Alone Expansion to the Hit Board Game

Nemesis Lockdown is the new, stand-alone expansion to one of the highest-rated games on Board Game Geek.

Awaken Realms’ Nemesis is a thrilling semi-cooperative board game that tosses you and your teammates onto an infested spaceship. It quickly shot up the Board Game Geek charts due to its excellent gameplay and challenging choices. And now, the game is getting a great-looking, stand-alone expansion, Nemesis Lockdown.

The new expansion doesn’t require the base game but will work with almost all of the game’s previous content. You and up to four friends can jump into the “cinematic Sci-Fi horror” and choose to play in either semi or full co-op. This box comes jam-packed with cardboard. For $118 you’re getting a truckload of content to play through.

Somewhat interestingly, the Nemesis Lockdown Kickstarter is being run a little differently than your typical campaign. Most campaigns either have stretch goals based on money raised or do away with the process entirely. Awaken Realms is instead just having the stretch goals unlock every few days. This ensures everything makes it into the box and keeps the hype rolling as new stuff is revealed.

The team is also directly incorporating player feedback into the box. Even from day one, they’re letting fans vote on which alien race they’d like to see included in the game. It’s a fun way to drive interaction that you don’t see that often on Kickstarter.

Truly, this is one of the more innovative Kickstarter campaigns I’ve seen in a while. And it seems to be working with over $3 million pledged so far. Of course, part of that is the base game being so great, but still.

If you’re on the lookout for a new, massive board game, Nemesis Lockdown might be worth a look. The game is available on Kickstarter for just under three more weeks at the time of this writing. So, get over there and check it out.

PS5 Shipments this Holiday Aren’t Expected to be Impacted by Pandemic, Says Jim Ryan

If PS5 shortages do occur after launch, Sony’s Jim Ryan has said that the lack of consoles worldwide wouldn’t be any different from past PlayStation releases.

With the Xbox Series X and PS5 both slated to launch later this year in the midst of a global pandemic, some have wondered whether or not manufacturing and shipments of each platform would be affected as a result. When it comes to Sony’s Interactive Entertainment’s current plans, the company doesn’t expect COVID-19 to ruin the next-gen console’s arrival by any means.

Speaking to CNET in a new interview, SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan made clear that the ongoing virus isn’t going to throw the launch of the PS5 off.  “We remain absolutely on track,” Ryan said plainly. “We’re going to launch this holiday, we will have a global launch. And where we’re greatly looking forward to it. And we very much want the gaming world to look forward to it, too.”

As for if any complications could arrive in the future that might change current plans, Ryan also said that nothing that Sony is viewing right now could set the PS5 and its planned shipment totals back. “Right now, we’re not seeing anything saying to us there’s going to be problems with quantities or we won’t be able to launch the way we want,” he expressed. While Sony might have shortages of the PS5 when it launches, Ryan indicated that this wouldn’t be any different than past PlayStation releases where consoles can often be hard to find at storefronts initially.

Ryan’s statements here come not long after Sony finally revealed that it will be holding a PS5 digital event next week on June 4. This stream is set to last for a little over an hour and, according to Ryan, will highlight upcoming games that will be releasing on the next-gen console. While not the first time that Sony has talked openly about the PS5, this is the event that many fans of the PlayStation brand have been anticipating for months.

The PS5 is slated to launch at a still undetermined price and release date for this holiday season. With this new event transpiring next week, however, maybe we’ll finally begin to get more clarity on both of these specifics.

Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World PS4, Switch, PC RPG Revealed

Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World – Itsuwari no Ousen Kouhou is coming to PS4, Switch and PC this winter in Japan.

Spike Chunsoft and the official Japanese Twitter account for the Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World series announced that a brand new game adaptation is coming on PS4, Switch and PC. The game is titled Re:Zero Kara Hajimaru Isekai Seikatsu – Itsuwari no Ousen Kouhou. The subtitle meaning “The Fake Royal Election Candidate”. It’s a tactical RPG and an Adventure game, featuring an original story supervised by the original author of the series. The game will launch this winter in Japan. Seeing how Re:Zero is pretty popular in the West, it might come over at some point.

Screenshots were revealed as well:

This is the second console game for the ReZero franchise. The first one was Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu -Death or Kiss-, released exclusively in Japan on March 30, 2017, on PS4 and PS Vita, developed by 5pb. Games.

Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World is initially a web novel written by Tappei Nagatsuki and published online on Shōsetsuka ni Narō from 2012. A light novel version illustrated by Shinichirō Ōtsuka started in 2014, published by Media Factory (Kadokawa). Shinichirō Ōtsuka is also handling this game’s illustrations.

The novel got multiple anime adaptations, which made the series extremely popular worldwide and one of the most popular franchises part of the Isekai trend: the massive amount of web novels where a protagonist gets transported to another world that started proliferating in early 2010s. I personally consider “Isekai” as a trend rather than a genre, as stories with characters getting transported to another world were always popular in Japanese popculture. Stories such as Aura Battler Dunbine, Escaflowne, or Now and Then, Here and There. “Isekai” stories all follow extremely similar story and character patterns, usually not found in alternate world stories stories prior to the 2010s.

The Last of Us Part II Pre-Orders in Europe are Tracking Higher Compared to Marvel’s Spider-Man

Despite portions of the game leaking, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II still seems well on track to sell at a high rate once it releases.

Over the past month or so, there has been a lot of pushback on The Last of Us Part II following the leaks for the project. Some who have spoiled themselves of the game’s story have seemingly been disappointed, and as a result, have voiced that they will no longer be buying the game. Others have remained optimistic and excited for the title, still saying that they’ll be there to purchase it on day one. Despite the back and forth, The Last of Us Part II still looks like it’s going to sell incredibly well once it releases based on some new info that has come to light.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO, Jim Ryan, The Last of Us Part II is still already seeing some rather impressive pre-order totals. In a new interview with CNET, Ryan stated that in Europe, The Last of Us Part II is already seeing higher pre-order numbers compared to those for Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. Considering that Spider-Man ended up being one of the best-selling PS4-exclusive titles ever, and to date has sold over 9 million copies worldwide.

Ryan went on to say that he has high hopes for The Last of Us Part II on a critical front, too, saying, “We hope this’ll be a defining game for this generation.” While it remains to be seen if the sequel will be of the same quality of the original game, Naughty Dog’s track record seems to point to it being quite impressive. Not to mention, what we’ve seen recently of the title in its new State of Play presentation looked pretty stellar.

Considering the original The Last of Us has to date sold over 20 million copies across PS3 and PS4, it shouldn’t come as much of a shock if Part II ends up doing gangbusters, especially with a PS4 install base that is near 110 million units. If past Sony releases are any indication, we should hear within a few weeks after launch on how the game ended up selling in its initial few days following release.

The Last of Us Part II is slated to arrive next month on June 19, exclusively on PS4.

Making a Video Game Hero: Sports Edition

Our latest Making a Video Game Hero series takes to the digital sports arenas around the world as we strive to create the best athlete.

Thus far, these lists have been relatively easy to put together. After all, whether you’re platforming in 2D or 3D, you’re still jumping around. Action-adventure is a little murkier, but even there, you basically know what you’re getting yourself into. However, when trying to build the ultimate sports game star, we ran into some obvious difficulties.

What sport are you playing? How do you possibly weigh the difference between a silky smooth jumper and a devastating stiff arm? We decided to just do the best we could to build the Bo Jackson of virtual sports. Except without, ya know, the crippling hip injuries that will derail his career before it really gets started.

So, what does this monstrosity of bulging muscles, computer-like intelligence, and boyish charm look like? Well, give our creation a look below, and be sure to let us know why we’re wrong in the comments below. And remember, the only rule is we can only use one character per game entry. Otherwise, this would just be all Backyard Sports characters.

Runners’ Up: Tom Brady (Madden NFL 09), Tiger Woods (Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14)

Tom Brady in Madden NFL 09 is the football savant’s most cerebral version. While his arm skills are worth salivating over, it’s the star’s mind that makes him one of the all-time greats. And while he lost that season in real life due to injury, his virtual counterpart tore up the NFL with reckless abandon.

Likewise, there aren’t many athletes that possess the same killer instincts that Tiger Woods had in his heyday. While we can argue over which video game version is his best, you can’t tell us there’s a virtual player who dominates with their brain and brawn more than Tiger did.

However, our ultimate choice is Pablo Sanchez from the Backyard Sports series. Look at the young lad. If you’re on the playground and selecting your first pick for any sport based on appearances, Pablo is one of the last kids you pick. He’s short. He’s got a potbelly. Heck, he even pretends like he can’t speak English, tossing in an unneeded communication gap for literally no reason. But then you see him on the field.

Regardless of the sport, Pablo Sanchez is, in action, the most dominant athlete in the video game sports world. He is good at everything. Literally everything. That talent has to come from somewhere, and it’s definitely not his 8-year-old beer gut. He’s like that kid in intramurals who was a stud in high school but came to college wanting to party more than practice and got kicked off the football team. Now he looks out of shape, but if you give him a sliver of lane, he’ll still dunk all over you. Not that that specific situation ever happened to me, or anything.

Put that propensity to be great in a genetically superior body and you have something truly scary on your hands.

Eyes: Vladimir Guerrero (MVP Baseball 2005)
Runners’ Up: Barry Sanders (Madden NFL 99), Kobe Bryant (NBA Live 2005)

Barry Sanders is one of the best to ever lace up. What set him apart from other running backs was not just his other-worldly body control that let him slip away from would-be tacklers, but his vision to find a sliver of daylight where no one else could. Plus, he was the subject of one of the best video game commercials of all time.

Kobe, on the other hand, had that locked-in glare that made opponents whither late in games. The Black Mamba was one of the most intimidating players in the NBA. When he got serious, you knew you were in for a show.

However, our choice for eyes is Vladimir Guerrero. Vlad never saw a pitch he couldn’t hit. Just watch some of the garbage he’s able to get a hold of in this video. And, in MVP Baseball 2005, the man was absolutely dominant. Manny Rameriz gives him a run for his money, but Vlad is certifiably that dude. He hit pitches off the ground, for goodness sakes!

width="670"

Mouth: Michael Jordan (NBA 2K11)
Runners’ Up: The Announcer (NBA Hangtime), Quentin Sands (Blitz: The League)

Please tell us you’ve watched The Last Dance by now. For sports fans, it is must-watch TV. Like, take a break from reading this, flip to another tab, and enjoy 10 hours of some top-tier content. Now that you’ve seen it, you know that MJ isn’t just the greatest basketball player ever. He’s also a truly next-level trash talker.

Sure, if our abomination had the booming voice of the Hangtime announcer, he’d be fun to hang out with. And, Quentin Sands certainly knows how to talk some junk. That said, Jordan takes it to a different universe. While some are going to say we’re wasting our Jordan slot on his mouth, others will remember he allegedly killed a man’s whole career just by talking to him. Ruthless.

width="670"

Torso: Jadeveon Clowney (NCAA Football 14)
Runners’ Up: Dante Culpepper (Madden NFL 06), Karl Malone (NBA Jam)

Dante Culpepper in Madden NFL 06 was an absolute hoss: impossible to bring down in the backfield and nearly unstoppable once he got up to speed on scrambles. His insane power would make for an excellent base for our monster.

Likewise, the Mailman was a force in NBA Jam. His defense and dunking were off the charts, making him the perfect counterpick when your friend inevitably selected Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant.

However, neither of those characters were inspired by this kind of real-world performance. That hit from Clowney might be the greatest hit anyone has ever laid out in any football game ever. Best of all, his NCAA Football 14 counterpart is capable of the same type of backfield destruction. Good gravy.

width="670"

Left Arm: Ken Griffey Jr. (The Ken Griffey series)
Runners’ Up: Michael Vick (Madden NFL 2004), Mike Tyson (Fight Night Round 4)

Some will probably balk at having Mike Vick’s arm as the option over his legs. That said, the sheer power that his Madden NFL 2004 character was able to generate essentially made EA rewrite the game’s defense for Madden NFL 2005 to compensate. The things he could do in that game were downright silly.

Another potentially surprising inclusion that comes due to our one character per game rule is Mike Tyson. While his turn in Punch-Out!! is legendary, we’re saving that game for something else. Iron Mike’s left arm is earth-shattering in the real and virtual worlds. Watch him throw punches as a 52-year-old man and then imagine taking one of those to the dome in his prime. No thanks!

But, for our money, we’re getting Griffey. If you were a ‘90s kid, there wasn’t a more lovable baseball star than Ken Griffey Jr. He has four different video games with his name on them and is among the best in every single one of them. We’d probably go with his Slugfest version, but you’re welcome to your preference. Regardless, there isn’t a left-arm we want more than The Kid’s.

Mario Tennis Aces Waluigi

Right Arm: Waluigi (Mario Tennis)
Runners’ Up: Steph Curry (NBA 2K20), Scott Stevens (NHL Hitz 2002)

Steph Curry might just be the best pure shooter in NBA history. His touch from beyond the arc is without equal in the modern game and he makes full-court shots look routine. And Scott Stevens had one of the meanest right hooks in NHL Hitz. If you got into a fight with the New Jersey Devils’ man, you already knew the knockout was coming. But we can do better than either of those.

Waluigi was created in a vat at Nintendo for Mario Tennis. And, to this day, Nintendo refuses to allow him to take his talents to anything other than side games. They’re too scared to see what Waluigi could do to their poster boy in a mainline Mario video game.

We’re not afraid though. Instead, we’ll use what Nintendon’t and graft the best Wa brother’s arm onto our monster, turning his right arm into a machine of sports prowess.

width="670"

Legs: Devin Hester (Madden NFL 08)
Runners’ Up: Didier Drogba (FIFA World Cup 2010), Tony Hawk (Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3)

Excuse the potato quality, but watch this rocket Drogba delivers from almost the centerline in FIFA World Cup 2010. Sure, it’s on a lower difficulty, but the power that the man from the Ivory Coast possessed in that video game was astounding.

Tony Hawk brings a bit more finesse to the party. His level of control with his feet baffles the mind. Later games would let him do more with the board, but THPS3 is the series’ pinnacle. It’s the Hawkman at his best.

However, Devin Hester is the first Madden player to get 100 speed. Seeing him line up for a return caused grown men and women to immediately wet their pants. He was absolutely a game-changer in Madden NFL 08, and we had to include him here.

width="670"

Mentor: Doc Louis (Punch-Out!!)
Runners’ Up: Bo Jackson (Tecmo Super Bowl), Stretch (NBA Street)

Sports aren’t just about your own personal skills. You need someone to teach you how to be great. Jordan had Phil Jackson. Brady had Bill Belicheck. Even an early prodigy like Cristiano Ronaldo needed a top-class manager in Alex Ferguson to completely bring out his visionary skill.

And so, our creation needs his own mentor. While we considered going with an all-time great player like Bo Jackson or an old-timer who still has it in Stretch, we ultimately went with Doc Louis.

After all, if he can take that chump Little Mac and teach him how to beat the video game version of Mike Tyson, imagine what he can do for our hulking behemoth. Our creation will not only outplay his competition but with Doc Louis’ help, he’ll outwit them too.

So there you have it. Our third video game creation is finished. Are there any changes you’d like to see? If so, let us know about them in the comments. And check back soon for our next dive into the wonderful world of human body modification. It’s sure to be a doozy.

Hideo Kojima Announces Death Stranding Reached Break-Even Point

Hideo Kojima answered both matters in a new interview.

Livedoor News published a new interview with Death Stranding‘s Hideo Kojima on May 29. The interview was conducted in late March 2020. Livedoor News asked Kojima to comment on the current sales numbers of Death Stranding and if the game is a success or not sales-wise. Here’s his answer.

Hideo Kojima: “We managed to get much farther than our safety line, and recovered all the development cost, so I think we can call it a “success”. The PC version will release soon too. We made enough money to prepare for Kojima Productions’ future plans. You shouldn’t worry about that.”

Later on in the interview, Livedoor News also asked Hideo Kojima about the recent rumors claiming Kojima Productions has acquired the IPs rights of P.T. and Metal Gear Solid from Konami. Here’s his answer:

Hideo Kojima: “This is 100% hoax. Unless I did get them somehow without realizing it myself (laughs).”

So there you have it.

It’s been over six months since Death Stranding first launched on PS4, and Kojima Productions recently shared some heartwarming comments for the occasion. The game is coming to PC on July 14, on both Steam and Epic Games Store. It was supposed to be out earlier but got delayed with the Covid-19 pandemic. You can check out our review of the game here.

Aftermath Review — Time is Still the Infinite Jest

Your soul is mine!

Mortal Kombat 11 is not just one of my favorite fighting games ever made; it is one of my favorite games of the current console generation. It feels incredibly balanced, has a rock-solid cast of characters, a fun story, and a ton of content for players to enjoy. It is a game I keep coming back to any time there is a bit of a dip in new game releases, and I still absolutely adore it every time I play. So, when it was announced a full-fledged expansion called Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath would be launching, I was incredibly optimistic. I would say that optimism was not misplaced as the expansion expands on the base game in many fun and awesome ways.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath brings another small group of playable fighters to the game. Sheeva, Fujin, and RoboCop (yes, the one from the incredible action movie) can all be used upon purchasing the new expansion. All of them play rather different compared to the rest of the cast of characters, giving the existing roster even more variety.

The most interesting of the bunch based solely on their inclusion alone is RoboCop. When he was revealed, I was genuinely surprised. Many of the past guest characters throughout the last few Mortal Kombat games have been from horror movies. Naturally, I expected a horror character, especially since Mortal Kombat 11 hasn’t had a true horror icon included just yet (I guess Terminator is kind of horror-ish). Despite my expectations, RoboCop makes for a very solid addition to the roster.

RoboCop seems to favor being mid to long-range. Most of his special attacks and moves tend to push the opponent to put them out of range of any close-quarter combat abilities. However, if your opponent does get close, RoboCop has a riot shield that counters most close attacks pushing the opponent away putting them back to mid-range. In my experience, I found the most success with RoboCop in zoning, staying mid to long-range from the opponent, and then countering with the riot shield.

width="1024"

Truth be told, RoboCop is not a character I would play. It’s not that he doesn’t play efficiently, but he just doesn’t mesh with how I like to play. That being said, just like most of the characters in Mortal Kombat 11, RoboCop seems to be a perfectly viable character. It helps to see fighting game experts like Sonic Fox absolutely destroy with him.

One of my gripes with Terminator’s implementation was the voice acting. Clearly, it was not Arnold Schwarzenegger voicing the robot man. That is not the case with RoboCop. NetherRealm Studios was able to get Peter Weller who lent his voice and likeness to the Mortal Kombat 11 version of the character. While it’s something that may seem small as his talents are really only used during intros, it adds authenticity making it truly feel like RoboCop is actually part of this bizarre universe.

NetherRealm Studios also does a great job in creating a moveset that is both reminiscent of what RoboCop would do on film yet still making it viable in Mortal Kombat 11‘s bonkers setting. I always imagined RoboCop as a bit stiff and tanky, but can still pack a mean punch whether that be close or long-ranged. That is perfectly exemplified with the character’s moveset.

The long-awaited Sheeva returns to Mortal Kombat with Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. Again, she really isn’t a character that fits my playstyle; I’ve never really favored bruisers. However, her moveset is incredibly varied and tons of fun.

width="1024"

Sheeva just seems like she can overwhelm you with crazy strong attacks, but she also has a ton of variety, too. She has a few zoning options, tons of incredibly strong close-range options, and a lot of combo potential to make her very intimidating. As I said, I never favored bruisers, but Sheeva is a ton of fun to play, and is on my short list of characters I want to learn.

My personal favorite of the bunch is Fujin. This is the first time he has been playable since 2006, when Mortal Kombat: Armageddon launched. The Wind God is quick with a lot of juggling potential that I’ve had a ton of fun with. Like Sheeva, he seems very well designed but wholly unique from the rest of the roster. From his tornado move, which you can manually control, to his high flying kicks, Fujin is a very interesting character and the one I enjoyed the most experimenting with.

Also packed with Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is a brand new story that continues where the base game’s story concludes. With NetherRealm Studios’ current track record, it seemed likely the Aftermath story would be good, at the very least. However, it actually managed to exceed my expectations.

Most of my love for the story is due to Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s performance as Shang Tsung. The sorcerer is front and center in Aftermath and it is absolutely tremendous. Every snarky line Tagawa says is perfectly executed in a way that was oddly endearing. Any time Shang Tsung was on screen, I was excited to hear what he had to say next — which is pretty odd coming from a fighting game story.

Besides Tagawa’s fantastic performance, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath continues the story in a fun and effective way. It is essentially a smaller scale time-hopping romp that follows Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, and Fujin. It utilizes all the DLC characters save for the guest characters like RoboCop and Terminator. Without spoiling anything, there are some really interesting meetings between characters that make the story worthwhile for Mortal Kombat fans.

width="1024"

The ending is probably the most disappointing, but it is still handled well. I really loved the idea of a clean slate which Mortal Kombat 11‘s base story mode presents. It gave off this notion that anything can happen in the next iteration of the series’ story. Again, without spoiling anything, there are some variant endings depending on a choice made at the end.

Aftermath gives the story a bit more direction moving forward, which will be interesting to see how NetherRealm Studios follows up with it in the next game or expansion. The ending is still somewhat shrouded in mystery, but there are some predictions that could be made from both endings. Overall, the 2 to 3 hour expanded story was a solid addition to an already wildly fantastic tale.

Usually, price is never a talking point for reviews, but given the amount of content given and the cost of said content, I felt like it should be discussed. While Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is a really great expansion with awesome new playable fighters and a fantastic new story, it does come at a cost. If you are really into everything Mortal Kombat 11 has to offer, I think the $39.99 price tag is decent. However, if you only want the story or a specific character, it is hard to recommend.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is a really great expansion to an already amazing fighting game. All of the playable characters are solid additions that feel pretty unique and the added story is another fun time traveling ride with a notable performance from Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. If you love Mortal Kombat 11, I highly recommend Aftermath. But if you’re strapped on cash, maybe hold off for a little bit.

PS5 Event Officially Taking Place Next Week on June 4

Sony is finally set to show off more of the PS5 in a new dedicated conference taking place next Thursday.

After months of anticipation, Sony has finally revealed when it will be holding the PS5 event that we’ve all been waiting for.

Over on the PlayStation Blog today, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO, Jim Ryan, announced that the long-awaited conference dedicated to the PS5 will occur on Thursday, June 4. Previously, we had heard reports that this conference was set to take place on June 3, but it seems as though the date shifted at the last minute. The stream will be featured on the official PlayStation website and will kick off at 4:00pm EST/1:00pm PST.

As for what will be featured in this stream, Ryan made clear that PS5 games will be shown off in full during this presentation. “That’s why I’m excited to share that we will soon give you a first look at the games you’ll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday,” Ryan said on the PlayStation Blog. “The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe. Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware.”

And in terms of how long this will last, Ryan also said that the stream is slated to take place for a little over an hour. Previously, it seems as though Sony planned for this event to take place in a typical, live event format, but due to the events that have transpired this year as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it will now be all-digital.

Lastly, Ryan also made clear that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to PS5 events and information this year. “This is part of our series of PS5 updates and, rest assured, after next week’s showcase, we will still have much to share with you,” Ryan stated.

All in all, it sounds like it’s going to be a massive day for Sony and the PlayStation 5, so it’s time to get excited. If you can’t tune into the presentation for yourself, we’ll keep you up to date with all the biggest pieces of news here on DualShockers once the event transpires.
